PROLOGUE author’s note

3 years back, I developed a sensation of low fever throughout the day. Even after consulting lot of doctors and series of complex tests, the reason could not be diagnosed. This was causing lot of mental and physical stress. One day I was introduced to “Water Therapy” by a friend, and within a week’s time I started feeling better. Today this sensation of fever has reduced significantly, and my own faith in water therapy has increased. I always wanted to share this complimentary method of healing with the world so that people could benefit the way I have been benefited. This is my way of expressing love for man kind.
In this book four Complimentary methods to health is discussed.
  1. Water Therapy
  2. Jin Shin Jyutsu.
  3. Oil Pulling  (only in revised edition)
  4. Health in your Kitchen (Only in revised edition)
All these methods are very ancient, but unfortunately they are not well documented. This is an attempt to spread the awareness about it.
The due credit for researching on Water Therapy must go to Dr Fereydoon Batmanghelidj (M.D), and to Master Jiro Murai for Jin Shin Jyutsu. This book is inspired by the work of these masters, who had devoted their lives on the subject. In utmost humility I do not proclaim expertise on these subjects.
I also wish to thank the three most important women, Padma my mother, Rita my wife and Kshitij my daughter, who have always been supportive in all my endeavors.

I am grateful to Kumar dada for motivating me to write this book.
I take this opportunity to thank Salona and Anuj Gupta from UK for facilitating the third edition of this book.
Grateful to Archana Jain for her efforts and translating this book in Hindi.

Disclaimer:
This book shall deliver the basic knowledge on these three methods. I would request the readers’ discretion to use this book more from the perspective of information. Chapter 1

Water Therapy

=======================================================================
History of Water Therapy:

Water Therapy is a very ancient method of healing the body. Thousands of years back this was known as “Usha Kaal Chikitsa”. In the mid-1800s there was a popular revival of the water cure in Europe, the United Kingdom, and America. During this time the term water cure was used synonymous with hydropathy, the term by which hydrotherapy was known in the 1800s and early 1900s. However, the therapeutic use of water precedes this popular revival. Its use has been recorded in ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilizations. In 1797, there was a publication by Dr James Currie of Liverpool which emphasizes on the use of water in the treatment of fever and other illness.
In olden days it was believed that “Aamrit” (nectar) - blessed water, would increase the life span. Have we ever thought an alternate meaning to this concept? The word Aamrit is combination of two words. “Aam” and “Rit”. Aam means common and Rit means procedure. It is possible that there was a common procedure of drinking water in those days which would keep mankind healthy and free from diseases. Was it water therapy? If yes then Aamrit could have been the procedure of drinking water and not necessarily the type of water.
Water is the most abundant element in our body. Approximately 73% of our body is made of water. This means a 100 kg person really has 73 kg of water. Like the Earth, which is three-quarters surrounded by water, the body is three- quarters water. So, quite literally, all the cells in our body are floating in an ocean of water. The water in our body contains different types of salts.
We do not even realize the fact that this earth is identical to our bodies in respect of water. All the five elements of Earth are present in the body. Like marine animals and land animals, water cells are present in the blood as well as in the organs.  It is fascinating to relate different aspects of the Earth to the body.
Like the geochemical processes that occur on Earth, where the oceans regulate land temperature of different landscapes, water in our body distributes heat in the body. It is a vital medium in which all chemical reactions of the body occur. All the body processes occur due to enzymatic reactions and zillions of reactions that occur in our body every second are promoted by water! Most of the reactions of the body either involve taking in or giving out of water. Just like the ocean is the medium for bulk transportation, water, in the form of blood circulates nutrients and hormones both within, and between body cells.
Earth is the only planet we know which has life and that is because of water. Similarly, we can live without food for many weeks but without water, we cannot exist beyond a few days. Keeping this in mind, we will discuss the purpose of water for the detoxification of the body and mind.
Generally, people have the idea that drinking plenty of fluids is sufficient to replenish water in the body. The water that is taken along with the fluids is adequate for maintenance of the body. But we are concerned about cleansing the body for health.
We are all aware of the fact that, 'water is life' and it is one of the essential elements for healthy body. All the important activities of the body are regulated and dependent on water. It carries all the hormones, vitamins, chemicals and oxygen to all the parts of the body. It is therefore called the “universal solvent” and even serves as a natural remedy for many diseases.
There are two types of toxins that are produced in our bodies or that enter our bodies through the environment.
Water soluble and water insoluble toxins.
The job of getting rid of these two types of toxins is assigned to two major organs of the body. One is the liver and other the kidneys. Kidneys flush out water soluble toxins with the help of water and the liver flushes out water insoluble toxins through the help of bile. The by-products of hormonal breakdowns and other metabolic products are water insoluble toxins that are flushed out by the liver. We will first discuss the kidneys and then the liver.
There are two million nephrons, the micro-chips of kidneys. These nephrons filter about 2000 liters of blood every day. Working with the kidneys, water helps to flush out toxic substances and waste materials from the body. It also helps the kidneys to produce sufficient urine to keep the body's inner chemistry (pH) in balance. If the chemistry (pH) is disturbed, the reactions are hampered, and these manifest as diseases. Hence, for the body to be healthy, water should be abundant. This is the key to water therapy.
Every day a huge number of chemicals reach the kidneys which are to be flushed out through urine. These include metabolic waste like urea (high protein diets cause high urea production), uric acids, breakdown products of hormones, vitamins, salts (sodium, potassium etc). All these are natural and the kidneys are accustomed to them for thousands of years….
Modern man's kidneys, however, are challenged with thousands of manmade toxic chemicals that enter the body through a variety of ways. The sources include food (coloring agents, flavors  preservatives, sweeteners, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, hormonal substances and antibiotics from dairy products), cosmetics (tooth paste, shaving creams, sprays, dyes, lipstick, eye lashes, nail polishes and removers), environmental pollutants both indoors, and outdoors.
Thus the body is choked with chemicals and the burden goes to the liver and kidneys. The liver converts the fat soluble toxic chemicals into water soluble chemicals and thereby helps the kidneys to flush the toxins through urine. However, with limited water supply, the kidneys cannot completely flush out metabolic and foreign waste. Therefore, metabolic wastes accumulate and cause diseases like cancers, allergies, hypertension, Parkinson's, kidney stones, gall stones, kidney failures etc. Accumulation of foreign chemicals accelerates the cause of the above diseases and also triggers other ailments. Water alone can help the body to get rid of these wastes.

All therapies -especially alternative healing - are directed towards cleansing toxic chemicals out of the body. They might use herbs to achieve detoxification.  But they cannot be done every day. Since water is the most abundant component of the body and is also the safest, most economical and natural cleansing agent, it works very well. Many friends have experienced dramatic changes in their disease symptoms within a couple of weeks of starting water therapy.
The nature of human mind is that it believes in complex things but not in simple, natural ways. The very nature of man's mind is to go for complex ways to solve simple problems. In health issues too, we use very complicated drugs and procedures, which can be used as a last resort or in emergency cases. The truth is that drugs may never be needed at all if one maintains good health.
It is an irony that we think of the tiniest chemicals that are needed for our body. Hence, we give much importance to vitamins, minerals, enzymes, hormones etc. We calculate calories, carbohydrates, proteins and fats. However, we forget water is the major ingredient of our body. It is this ignorance that causes many diseases. Water is the safest supplement one can take everyday to cure and prevent diseases. If this water supplement is taken regularly, perfect health can be achieved.
All of us know that water is good for the body. But not many know what happens to the body if it does not receive its daily need of water.

Here is interesting information about water:

• Do you know that the human body is made up of between 55 and 75 percent water? Not known to many is the fact that lean people have more water in the bodies because muscle holds more water than fat;
• Do you know that every system in our bodies depends on water and is in need of constant water replenishment;
• Do you know that lack of water in human body to carry on normal function can lead to dehydration? And do you know that there are dehydration-produced diseases which pose health risks for the young and the old. Some signs and symptoms of dehydration include excessive thirst, fatigue, headache, dry mouth, little or no urination, muscle weakness, dizziness and light headedness; Even a slightly dehydrated person may lack energy considering that just a 5% drop in body fluid will cause as much as a 30% lose of energy;
• Do you know that chronic and persistently increasing dehydration is the root cause of almost all currently encountered major diseases of the human body;
• Do you know that for measuring your water intake – alcohol, coffee, tea and caffeine containing beverages don’t count as water;
• Do you know that energy drinks are no substitute for plain water. In fact, caffeinated beverages can further dehydrate a person.
• Do you know that one of the most beneficial reasons why we should take water to sustain our body requirement is because water flushes out the toxins which cause diseases as well as other harmful substances that we expose ourselves everyday.

Water is vital to your health. Every part of your body is made up of cells. Protoplasm, the basic material of living cells, is made of fats, carbohydrates, proteins, salts, and similar elements combined with water. Water acts as a solvent, transporting, combining, and chemically breaking down these substances. So, we need to drink water in order to keep our cells hydrated, to keep our body's electrochemical balance to stay alive. Yes, drinking water regularly is healthful.
As someone said: “No man-made medicine in the world can heal as effectively as clean drinking water!”.Sometimes we get headaches, back pain, and other soreness simply because our muscles have become very stiff. Our muscles consist largely of water and as such, we must keep them hydrated. The spinal cord discs also carry water, most of which supports your upper body. In addition, joints must be kept lubricated all the time.

Dr. Fereydoon Batmanghelidj – PIONEER in Water Therapy

Dr. Fereydoon Batmanghelidj (for simplicity referred as Dr. B here on) who died in 2004 claimed that dehydration is the underlying cause of many diseases, including some that the medical profession regarded as incurable. He claimed that users of his "Natural Therapy Cure Program" could cure virtually all pains at no cost—forever, reduce blood pressure naturally; lower blood cholesterol without medication; lose unwanted pounds; regain youthful skin; increase mental power and alertness; become stress-free; prevent and cure migraine headaches; prevent Alzheimer's disease; prevent heart disease; permanently cure angina pain; regain sexual powers; cure asthma in a few day; and even cure multiple sclerosis. Dr. B wrote his first book “Your Body’s Many Cries for Water” in 1992, in which he stated that a dry mouth is not a reliable indicator of dehydration. The body signals its water shortage by producing pain. Dehydration actually produces pain and many degenerative diseases, including asthma, arthritis, hypertension, angina, adult-onset diabetes, lupus and multiple sclerosis.
Dr. B’s message to the world is, “You are not sick, you are thirsty. Don’t treat thirst with medication.”
His best-known work, a book called “Your Body's Many Cries for Water” is a master work in the field of water therapy. . He has spent most of his scientific life researching the link between pain and disease and chronic dehydration. Dr. B discovered the healing powers of water when he was serving as a political prisoner in an Iranian jail. He successfully treated 3,000 fellow prisoners suffering from stress-induced peptic ulcer disease with the only medication he possessed -- water. This is when he understood for the first time in medical history that the body indicates its water shortage by producing pain. Since his prison experience, he has focused his full-time attention on dehydration-produced health problems in the body. His discoveries have helped thousands of people suffering from a variety of pains and degenerative diseases, and regain their health. As he explains in great detail in his many books, most common diseases (for which there are a variety of names such as asthma, arthritis, hyper tension and so on) are really just names given to patterns of symptoms created by the body's drought management system.
When the human body begins to get dehydrated, it initiates a drought management system that seeks to conserve water. The symptoms characterized by this drought management effort are given disease names and treated with drugs.

Here's a straightforward example of Dr B’s research:

Dr B explains the concept with the help of Asthma as an example. The brain must be kept hydrated at all times. So the body, when it is lacking water, will do everything possible to keep supplying adequate water to the brain. This involves limiting the loss of water in other areas of the body. As Dr. B points out, simply breathing causes the loss of a significant quantity of water each and every day, depending on the climate in which you live and your level of physical exercise.
If you are experiencing chronic dehydration from not drinking enough water, or from drinking water-depleting drinks such as coffee, beer or beverages containing sugar, your body tries to prevent respiratory water loss by producing histamines which close off the capillaries in your lungs. Through the constriction of these capillaries, water loss is reduced, but of course breathing is made far more difficult. It's important to understand that the body is doing this on purpose. The body is producing histamines as a strategy, not as a disease or something gone awry. The body wants to constrict the capillaries in your lungs because it is trying to save your brain.
What is conventional medicine's answer to this production of histamines by the body? Well, of course, it is the prescription of histamine linked drugs that are designed to counteract the histamines produced, which was originally done by the body to conserve water. These histamine linked drugs then open up the capillaries in the lungs, making breathing seem easier. As you can see here, the conventional medicine approach treats nothing but the symptoms, and in doing so it counteracts the body's own intentions and strategies to conserve water. According to Dr B what patients with asthma really need is lots of water on a regular basis, not histamine linked drugs.
As Dr. B explains in his books, the same sort of treatment is taking place with other diseases as well -- most notably hypertension and arthritis. Many of the drugs marketed today are, in effect, various forms of histamine linked drugs, which counteract the body's efforts to conserve water.
Dr B says what we need to be doing as a population, of course, is simply drink more water. But there's more to it than just that -- we also need to stop drinking beverages that deplete our water supplies. Believe it or not, most beverages that are consumed today actually don't offer hydration; drinking soft drinks results in a loss of water in your body, NOT a gain in water. Once you drink one bottle of a soft drink beverage, you feel like you still need more, and thus the body is trapped in a never-ending cycle of craving for hydration that simply cannot be met by consuming soft drinks. What your body truly craves is water. Please make the children understand this otherwise we will have society of diseased people in future. Do you now understand why our grand parents were healthier than us?????
Caffeine is also another water-depleting drug. Consuming caffeine in any form, whether soft drinks or coffee or pills, creates a diuretic effect in your body, which means your body begins to eliminate water through urination. Sadly, most people continue to drink alarming quantities of soft drinks, coffee and other beverages that actually deplete water from their systems.
There's another fascinating point on chronic dehydration and weight loss that's worth mentioning here, too many people who are attempting to lose weight end up in a state of chronic dehydration because they don't want to drink water for fear that it will add "water weight" to their bodies. They actually impair their body's ability to metabolize fat because they're afraid to drink enough water on a regular basis. In reality, being fully hydrated is a prerequisite to weight loss. If you want to lose weight, you have to give your body enough water so that it's no longer in a state of emergency. When the body is in a state of chronic dehydration, or a state of emergency, it will not let go of fat supplies easily. It wants to hold on to everything it can eat or drink. The only way to convince your body to let go of body fat, and start metabolizing body fat, is to drink a lot of water - enough water so that your body feels safe in letting go of unneeded calories. (Remember: water has zero calories, is low-carbohydrate and has zero grams of fat, so drink up!)
It's also interesting to note that many people who go on short term diets and who think they're losing five or ten pounds over a couple of days are really only losing water weight. They haven't lost any body fat at all but they have managed to put themselves in a state of chronic dehydration that will inevitably lead to weight gain once they return to normal habits of eating and drinking. People wanting to loose weight should practice Water Therapy with warm water and will be surprised with results!
Dr B states that there's no money in the treatment of disease with water, so there's no motivation for any organization whatsoever to reveal the truth about the role of water in preventing chronic disease in human beings. Why would profit making organisations tell you that you can prevent arthritis, asthma, hypertension and other diseases by simply drinking water?

Dr B explains the connection between water and many diseases:

Diabetes is a disease that is strongly influenced by water consumption. Adult-onset diabetes is another adaptive state to severe dehydration of the human body. To have adequate water in circulation and for the brain's priority water needs, the release of insulin is inhibited to prevent insulin from pushing water into all body cells. In diabetes, only some cells get survival rations of water.

Hypertension and high blood pressure is a state of adaptation of the body to a generalized drought, when there is not enough water to fill all the blood vessels that diffuse water into vital cells. As part of the mechanism of reverse osmosis, when water from the blood serum is filtered and injected into important cells through minute holes in their membranes, extra pressure is needed for the "injection process." Just as we inject I.V. "water" in hospitals, so the body injects water into tens of trillions of cells all at the same time. Adequate water will bring blood pressure back to normal

High cholesterol levels are an indicator of early drought management by the body. Cholesterol is a clay-like material that is poured in the gaps of some cell membranes to safeguard them against losing their vital water content to the osmotic ally more powerful blood circulating in their vicinity. Cholesterol, apart from being used to manufacture nerve cell membranes and hormones, is also used as a "shield" against water taxation of other vital cells that would normally exchange water through their cell membranes.

Heartburn is a signal of water shortage in the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract. It is a major thirst signal of the human body. The use of antacids or tablet medications in the treatment of this pain does not correct dehydration, and the body continues to suffer as a result of its water shortage. Not recognizing heartburn as a sign of dehydration and treating it with antacids and pill medications will, in time, produce inflammation of the stomach and duodenum, hiatal hernia, ulceration, and eventually cancers in the gastrointestinal tract, including the liver and pancreas.

Migraine headache is a sign of water needed by the brain and the eyes. The type of dehydration that causes migraine might eventually cause inflammation of the back of the eye and possibly loss of eye sight.

Colitis pain is a signal of water shortage in the large gut. It is associated with constipation because the large intestine constricts to squeeze the last drop of water from the excrements - thus the lack of water lubrication. Not recognizing colitis pain as a sign of dehydration will cause persistent constipation. Later in life, it will cause fecal impacting: it can cause diverticulitis, haemorrhoids and polyps, and appreciably increases the possibility of developing cancer of the colon and rectum.

Rheumatoid joint pain - arthritis - is a signal of water shortage in the painful joint. It can affect the young as well as the old. The use of pain-killers does not cure the problem.

Low back pain and ankylosing arthritis of the spine are signs of water shortage in the spinal column and discs - the water cushions that support the weight of the body. These conditions should be treated with increased water intake. Not recognizing arthritis and low back pain as signs of dehydration in the joint cavities and treating them with pain-killers, manipulation, acupuncture, and eventually surgery will, in time, produce osteoarthritis when the cartilage cells in the joints have eventually all died. It will produce deformity of the spine. It will produce crippling deformities of the limbs.

Dr B did lot of work in the field of water therapy, still people cannot psychologically accept the idea that diseases could be prevented or reversed by drinking something that would be freely available to the public. Unfortunately the thought doesn't even penetrate common man’s belief system.

Here is the list of some major diseases where water therapy can bring relief:

  1. Head Ache

 HOW TO DO WATER THERAPY?

  • Early morning, after you get up from bed, (without even brushing your teeth) drink 1.25 litters of water i.e. 5 to 6 glasses. You may wash your face thereafter.
  • Here it is very essential to note that nothing else, neither drinks nor solid food of any sort should be taken within 1 hr. before and after drinking these 1.25 litters of water.
  • It is also to be strictly observed that no alcoholic drinks shall be taken the previous night.
  • If required, boiled and filtered water may be used for this purpose. Is it possible to drink 1.25 litters of water at one time? This is a BIG QUESTION? To begin with, one may find it difficult to drink 1.25 litters of water at one time, but one will get used to it gradually. Initially, while practicing you may start by drinking half a litre of water and gradually increase it by 100 ml every week till you reach the desired 1.25 litter of water. You may find the necessity to urinate 2-3 times within an hour, but it will become normal after some time.
  • During the day you may continue to drink water as required by the body, which depends on the climate as well as work profile of each individual. However drinking 150 ml per hour over and above the first 1.25 Litre can be considered as rule of thumb.
  • 150 ml of water 30 minutes before meals will help digestion and reduce acidity.
  • 150 ml of water before bath will help lower blood pressure.
  • 150 ml of water before sleep will reduce chances of stroke or heart attack.
  • During the day do not drink water within 45 minutes of solid food like lunch or dinner.

Often, I am asked this question “How long to continue this water therapy”. The answer is Life long! You can get the results depending on the chronic ness of the disease, however it may take a minimum of 6 months till you start getting the full benefits of water therapy. You can see references of thousands of people who have been benefited by it on the internet.

HOW DOES PURE WATER ACT?

Consuming ordinary drinking water by the right method purifies human body.  It renders the colon more effective by forming new fresh blood, known in medical terms as “Haematopoiesis”.  That the mucosal folds of the colon and intestines are activated by this method, is an undisputed fact, just as the theory that new fresh blood is produced by the mucosal fold.
If the colon is cleansed then the nutrients of the food taken several times a day will be absorbed and by the action of the mucosal folds they are turned into fresh blood.  The blood is all important in curing ailments and restoring health and for this water should be consumed as suggested.
The way bathing cleans the external body parts, same way water therapy cleans the internal body parts.

Some Naturopaths advise to use edible castor oil in the initial stage of water therapy, to clean colon even better. Drink 20 ml of edible castor oil, around 4am in the morning at following frequency.
  • Every day in the first week.
  • Alternate days in the second week.
  • Twice a week in the third week.
  • Once a week from the fourth week on wards.
I have experienced better results with castor oil in detoxification process. However consulting your Physician before using castor oil would be advised.

Stop Water Therapy immediately:

  • If one gets swelling in the body, especially in legs, hands or face.
  • If one gets running nose or continuous cough.
  • If one feels giddy or restless after drinking the water.
  • People with Kidney disorders should not practice water therapy.
  • If one feels disoriented after drinking morning water than do water therapy with only 600 ml of water and introduce sea salt in food.
  • Please consult your physician before starting water therapy.

Let us conclude this section on Water Therapy with a popular Japanese story:

One early morning, a skinny old man, Mr. Yamada went to a public bathhouse. Usually, Yamada was the first customer to visit every morning because he was ashamed of his skinny body. Thinking that he was the first one to enter the bathhouse, he saw a man with a well-built body, smiling and greeting to him.
"Good morning, sir", the stranger said.
Yamada also greeted, "Good morning, sir".
He continued to say, "By the way, sir, do you live near here?"
The smiling stranger answered, "Oh, I am travelling around. Why do you visit the bath so early in the morning? Do you enjoy taking a bath?"
Yamada replied, "You see, I am very skinny suffering with lot of dis-eases and I'm so ashamed to show my body."
The glowing and good looking man said, "Oh, it's easy to get healthy, just drink a glass of water every time you wake up. After a week, increase your drinking to two glasses of water daily. Is it so simple? I was also skinny like you before."
After the stranger talked to Yamada, he left the bathhouse promptly. Mr. Yamada immediately rushed to the counter to ask the stranger's name but there was nobody around there.
At the counter of the bathhouse, "Chief, do you know the man who just left here now?"
The chief replied, "What are you talking? You are the only one customer here."

Surprised, Mr. Yamada went home and sat for breakfast with his wife, and then he caught sight of a figurine on the altar. He remembered that the smiling man was one of the Seven Gods of Fortune (Shichifukujin) he was praying daily.

Chapter 2

Jin Shin Jyutsu

======================================================================

Back ground of Jin Shin Jyutsu

It is believed that God created human being out of his own energy, and while human was connected closely with Him, he was fit and healthy. Slowly, as man began to get self-involved, he left the sanctuary of the spirit. The balance of energy thus got disturbed and resultant blocks caused innumerable disease. To combat this and remove the blockages, man sought methods to keep healthy, mentally, physically and spiritually. As the days passed by, even this knowledge was obscured, till it was rediscovered and revived by great sages. One method of healing - Jin Shin Jyutsu - was revived by sage Jiromurai of Japan, who introduced it to 20th century culture. He referred to this art in many ways including the art of happiness, the art of longevity, the art of benevolence and finally Jin Shin Jyutsu, literally translated as "the Creator’s art through compassionate man/woman."
Jin Shin Jyutsu is an ancient holistic healing art, which is gentle and non-invasive. While it is difficult to say exactly where it began, there are evidences of it in many ancient cultures. Jin Shin Jyutsu was widely known in antiquity -- before the time of Buddha, Moses. Ancient Egypt, India, China and Japan all have historical evidence that indicates that, what we now call Jin Shin Jyutsu, was known in those cultures as well. This art was handed down by word of mouth for centuries. As with any oral tradition, the true essence and accuracy of the art eventually became altered, watered-down and called by different names. This resulted in the emergence of many modified versions. There exists however, one text where the art was written down in its entirety, though cryptically. That was in a Japanese text written as a creation story called Kojiki.
This healing technique is an art that can be learnt easily by anybody, as it is simple and easy to practice. It does not involve any pressure or massage. Gentle holding of specific points in specific patterns assists the release of energy blockages in the meridians, simultaneously healing it.
Jin Shin Jyutsu physio-philosophy is an ancient art of harmonizing the life energy in the body. Jin Shin Jyutsu brings balance to the body's energies, which promotes optimal health and well-being, and facilitates our own profound healing capacity. It is a valuable complement to conventional healing methods, inducing relaxation and reducing the effects of stress.
Jin Shin Jyutsu is an ancient Asian healing art that releases the deep tension and imbalance in the body. Once this is released, your body can heal itself more easily and completely. This results in more vibrant health, better rest, less pain, faster healing, and greater resistance to illness and degeneration.
In the Far East, it has been known for centuries that ill health is rooted in tension and imbalance. Stress and the resulting tension can rob us of our optimum health. As we know, tension develops due to a variety of stress factors. Some of these are physical injury, emotional strain, mental fatigue, lack of sleep, environmental toxins and diet. Typically tension has been part of our lives for so long that we may not even notice its presence, but we frequently feel its effects. Left unreleased, tension causes imbalance in our body's systems that can contribute to fatigue and discomfort. As the tension and imbalance deepens in the body, it can become illness and degenerative disease.

Jin Shin Jyutsu is similar to acupuncture but without the discomfort of needles.  The practitioner manually adjusts points on the body in specific sequences.  These points, called "safety energy locks" are locations on the body where energy of "chi" tends to lock up and cause tension and imbalance.  By adjusting these key safety energy locks properly, an amazing thing happens.  Vitality and health start to be restored.  And it works on all levels - physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Jin Shin Jyutsu strengthens the immune system, helping prevent illness.  Used pre and post operatively, healing occurs at a more rapid pace - therefore it is a valuable adjunct to Modern medicine.
Using all the information he had uncovered, Murai conducted extensive experiments on himself for over 50 years. He found that Jin Shin Jyutsu produced a depth of awareness that went beyond anything described in the ancient texts of Chinese medicine.

How Does Jin Shin Jyutsu Work?

Einstein taught us that all matter is energy. Our bodies are literally dense energy.  In the Far East they have known for centuries that this energy moves in very specific pathways or flows throughout the body.  Whenever there is trauma at any level – mental, physical or emotional- the energy flows will lock up (similar to a circuit breaker) to keep us from overload.
The problems arise when these points stay locked up. When this happens the body has to find less efficient ways to move the energy throughout our systems, impairing our body’s own self-healing ability.  Jin Shin Jyutsu dissolves these blockages and re-establishes the proper flow of energy, thus restoring our body’s natural self-healing capacity.
Jin Shin Jyutsu relies on three main vital energy pathways, which are known as “The trinity”. These pathways ascend and descend within the body. They balance and harmonise the body, spirit and mind via twenty-six energy point locations contained within the body. These points are known as Safety Energy Factors. It is through these points that energy flows can be unlocked within the body.
Human beings will naturally make use of their energy locks during their daily lives. For instance, folding hands, crossing arms or placing hands on hips are ways in which we use our Safety Energy Factors. According to Jin Shin Jyutsu, these actions can modify the flow of energy within the body. Learning Jin Shin Jyutsu is about learning how we affect our energy flows during the course of our daily lives.
Jin Shin Jyutsu is like the father of acupuncture, acupressure or Shiatsu method of treatment, but without the discomfort or needles.  The practitioner manually adjusts points on the body in specific sequences.  These points, called "safety energy locks" are locations on the body where energy tends to lock up and cause tension and imbalance.  By adjusting these key safety energy locks properly, an amazing thing happens.  Vitality and health start to be restored.  And it works on all levels - physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Jiromurai describes energy as matter moving in definite pathways. They move all around our body in the ascending and descending order in front and back of the body and upper and lower side and right and left side of the body. These pathways of energies are known as flows. Jin Shin Jyutsu identifies 26 “safety energy locks” where energy concentrates along the pathways. These sites act as circuit breakers, shutting down and restricting the flow of energy, to protect the body when injury or the abuse of everyday physical, mental and emotional stress occurs.
Fear, according to Jiromurai, is the cause of all disease. Apart from this worry, sadness, anger and pretence are also responsible for causing disease and are called attitudes. If these attitudes are corrected, healing takes place and our whole body gets harmonized physically, mentally and spiritually.

Procedure:

A Jin Shin session begins with listening to the pulse, which reveals to the practitioner information about the current flow of energy and state of being of the client. It indicates where he or she needs help. Unlike modern medicine, the emphasis is not on diagnosing, but on harmonizing. All disease begins with blockages of energy, and the pulse shows the practitioner the specific energy points that need to be held to restore the harmonious flow, without creating additional stress in the client's mind about the condition.

The remaining treatment consists of gently holding points in various combinations until complete harmony of energy and pulsation is established.
The main central:

The Main Central Universal Harmonizing Energy corresponds energetically and physically most closely to the spinal column (the most concentrated physical manifestation of energy in vertebrates) and associates similarly with the chakra modalities. As a source, it functions as a master gateway for the myriad body function energies, coordinating general harmony throughout the bodily network of energetic pathways. It is therefore a good idea to keep this flow as "tuned-up" as possible. The following diagram outlines a daily self-help session to balance the Main Central.

Begin with the right hand on the top of the head (R1) and left hand on the third eye or center of eyebrows (L1). Keeping the right hand in place, move the left hand to the tip of the nose (L2). Continue to follow the diagram above down the front of the body until the left hand reaches the pubic bone (L5). Move the right hand to the tip of the coccyx (R2). Hold the hand positions while "listening" for the harmony in your pulse (you will note, with practice, the slight pulsation at each point--hold the positions until you sense rhythmic, synchronous pulsations in the right and left hands); imagine energy flowing in the direction of your left hand's placement, down the front and up the back of your spine.

The hands and the fingers are the keys to self help in Jin Shin Jyutsu.

The procedure is to wrap the hand over the finger of another hand. Each finger should be held for a minimum of 3 minutes. However no harm holding it longer. Holding the fingers every day, whenever your hands are free to do so, is a good way to clean, harmonise and revitalise all our 144,000 energy functions. The good news is that the effects over time are cumulative, so the more you hold your fingers, the more you’ll feel the effects (you’ll feel calmer, think straighter, have more energy etc)

Chapter 3

         Oil Pulling

==========================================================

History of Oil Pulling:

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic remedy for oral health and detoxification. It involves the use of pure oils as agents for pulling harmful bacteria, fungus and other organisms out of the mouth, teeth, gums and even throat. It is mentioned in the Ayurvedic text Charaka Samhita, where it is called Kavala Gandoosha or Kavala Graha.
Charaka samhita Ch V -78 to 80 talks on Oil pulling as “It is beneficial for strength of jaws, depth of voice, flabbiness of face, improving gustatory sensation and good taste for food. One used to this practice never gets dryness of throat, nor do his lips ever get cracked; his teeth will never be carious and will be deep rooted; he will not have any toothache nor will his teeth set on edge by sour intake; his teeth can chew even the hardest eatables”
Dr. F. Karsch, M.D., presented a paper to the All-Ukrainian Association outlining rather incredible possibilities oil pulling is capable of. Going by Dr. Karsch, oil pulling benefits can help with almost any illness or chronic condition.

The Procedure:

Step1:
First thing in the morning on an empty stomach and before drinking any liquids (including water), pour exactly one tablespoon of sesame oil (or whatever oil you have chosen) into your mouth. It is advisable not to do this process at any other time. Children can also do this with less quantity of oil provided they have control and practice not to swallow the oil.

Step 2:
Swish the oil around in your mouth without swallowing it. Move it around in your mouth and through your teeth, as if it was mouthwash (don't tilt your head back to gargle though). You'll find that the oil will start to get watery as your saliva mixes with it. Keep swishing. If your jaw muscles get sore while swishing, you're putting too much into it. Relax your jaw muscles and use your tongue to help move the liquid around the inside of your mouth. When you do this correctly, you'll feel very comfortable. Pretty soon. In my experience, you will get comfortable with the process in about a week’s time.
There is no right way or wrong way to swish and pull oil. Don't focus on doing it right. Do it with very natural movement. Do this gently, not vigorously, in a relaxed way for about 15-20 minutes. In the beginning you may start with the lesser time and gradually keep increasing to about 20 minutes.
If you have the unbearable urge to swallow and if it becomes too unpleasant, spit out and try again. It can be a bit unpleasant at first when you’re not used to it, but soon won’t be bothersome at all, just like brushing your teeth.
When the oil has become saturated with the toxins it has pulled out, it may become whitish and a thinner, milky consistency, depending on the type of oil used. Each time you oil pull, it can take a different amount of time to get to that point, so 20 minutes is a general rule of thumb, but you can experiment with this.
If you spit out before 20 minutes. start again, the process is to make the oil swish enough time in your mouth so that it becomes a white thick substance which is a indication of process completion.

Step3:
As the end of the oil pulling session approaches, Spit the oil out, then rinse the mouth with warm salt water. ( Just use normal table salt). Salt water rinsing isn’t absolutely necessary, but is very helpful as an antimicrobial and to soothe any inflammation and proven to be effective in rinsing out any toxins which may be left out in the mouth. When I began this process, I never used to rinse with warm salt water. That started giving me the problem of sore throat. Since then I make it a point to rinse and then gargle with warm salt water, and relieved from the problem of sore throat.
The most effective oil pulling is done with a tablespoon of organic sesame oil. Other oils such as coconut, sunflower and olive oil have been used, although sesame oil is considered one of the best oils for this practice. I recommend alternating oils every couple of days to get the full benefit. Putting high quality organic oils into the mouth has a multi-effect outcome. I feel more comfortable with organic coconut oil. However remember not to do Oil Pulling with coconut hair oil, as it may have some inedible chemicals.
Firstly, the oils mix with the saliva, turning it into a thin, white liquid. Lipids in the oils begin to pull out toxins from the saliva of the mouth. As you swish the oil around the mouth, teeth, gums and tongue, the oil continues to absorb toxins, and usually ends up turning thick and viscous and white. Once the oil has reached this consistency, it is spit out before the toxins are reabsorbed into the body.

What does oil pulling do?
Multiple scientific studies show the efficacy of oil pulling therapy. One study shows that oil pulling with sesame oil can boost overall oral health. Specifically, using sesame oil as an oral health agent helps to reduce the amount of germ count in both teeth plaque and mouth saliva. Scientists believe that the lipids in the oil both pull out bacteria, as well as stop bacterial from sticking to the walls of the oral cavity.

Oil pulling may also increase saponification in the mouth, creating a soapy environment that cleanses the mouth as vegetable fat is an emulsifier by nature. Most interesting is perhaps the ability of oil to cleanse out harmful bacteria, as well as reduce fungal overgrowth. These oils also possibly help in cellular restructuring, and are related to the proper functioning of the lymph nodes and other internal organs.

Other possible benefits of oil pulling for oral health include:
  • Overall strengthening of the teeth and gums and jaws.
  • Prevention of diseases of the gums and mouth, such as cavities and gingivitis Prevention of overall tooth decay.
  • Prevention for bad breath.
  • Potential holistic remedy for bleeding gums.
  • Prevention of dryness of the lips, mouth and throat.
  • Possible holistic treatment for general soreness in the jaw area.
Benefits Beyond the Mouth?
Believe it or not, ancient Ayurvedic health practitioners believed that oil pulling could reduce more than just diseases of the mouth and throat. Today, many holistic practitioners recommend its use for a variety of health concerns. It is believed that these oils help the lymphatic system of the body as harmful bacteria are removed and beneficial micro flora are given with a healthy environment to flourish. Because of this holistic perspective, oil pulling has been used as a preventative health measure for many other conditions.

Other possible benefits of oil pulling for overall health include:
  • Migraine headache relief
  • Correcting hormone imbalances
  • Reducing inflammation of arthritis
  • May help with gastro-enteritis
  • Aids in the reduction of eczema
  • May reduce symptoms of bronchitis
  • Helps support normal kidney function
  • May help reduce sinus congestion
  • Some people report improved vision
  • Helps reduce insomnia
  • Reduced hangover after alcohol consumption
  • Aids in reducing pain  Reduces the symptoms of allergies
  • Helps detoxify the body of harmful metals and organisms

Scientific Studies on Sesame Oil & Oil Pulling
Sesame oil is particularly high in the antioxidants sesamol, sesamin, and sesamolin. It also holds a high concentration of Vitamin E and polyunsaturated fatty acids. These antioxidants have been found to stop the absorption of negative forms of cholesterol in the liver. Multiple studies have shown the antibacterial capacities of sesame oil. These studies support the use of oil pulling in the prevention of dental cavities and gingivitis.
A 2007 study looking into the effect of oil pulling (with sunflower oil) on plaque and gingivitis on oral soft and hard tissues. Results found that after 45 days of oil pulling, subjects showed a statistically significant reduction in gingivitis.
Another study, conducted in 2008 found a“remarkable reduction in the total count of bacteria” in the mouth, and an overall marked reduction in susceptibility dental cavities. The antibacterial activity of sesame oil was also studied and found to have an effect on the Streptococcus mutants in the mouth. In fact, these studies showed an overall reduction of bacteria from 10 to 33.4% in participants, and after 40 days of oil-pulling, participants were found to show 20% in average reduction in oral bacteria. Moreover, half of all participants in this case study showed a drastic reduction in susceptibility to dental caries.

FAQs on Oil Pulling:

What is the best time to practice oil pulling?
Ayurveda advised oil pulling in the morning on empty stomach. Dr Karach advised oil pulling before breakfast on empty stomach. One hour after drinking water or tea or coffee or liquids in the morning but before breakfast. The best time is when you do not feel well for any health problem do oil pulling on empty stomach. I have consulted many expert on this. Some prefers to do oil pulling before drinking the 1.25 L of water, some prefer to drink water wait for 45 minutes and then do oil pulling. My advice is to drink 1.25L of water, the first thing in morning and after 45 minutes do oil pulling.

Who can practice oil pulling?
Everybody above the age of five years can practice. For children of five years and above use only a teaspoon (five ml) of oil for oil pulling. People with dentures should remove them and practice. Woman can practice oil pulling during periods and also pregnancy.

How much time gap is required to eat or drink after oil pulling?
After doing oil pulling, wash your mouth and then you can eat or drink and no time gap is required.

What other oils can be used for oil pulling?
Dr Karach had suggested Sunflower Oil. Sesame Oil was prescribed in Ayurveda texts for oil pulling. Both oils worked well in curing health problems. Some found sesame oil better. However my personal favorite is organic coconut oil.

The quantity of 10 ml of oil is too little for oil pulling. Can we do with 20 ml of oil?
When we do oil pulling the entire oil should become thin, like water and no oily feeling should be left. When that happens we would have utilized the entire oil for the purpose of oil pulling. This happens within 15 to 20 minutes for most of the people. If the quantity is increased it takes more time to become watery and white and many would not like to spend more time on pulling. Spitting when it is still oily is waste of oil and a feeling of freshness does not come which is not desirable. If you feel a few ml of more oil is required try, there is no harm. This is also the reason for suggesting only five ml of oil for children.

Can we do any other work while doing oil pulling?
No. It is advised to do oil pulling slowly, chin up preferably in sitting position, to see that oil pulled through teeth and touches all portions of mucous membrane in the oral cavity.

Is there any difference in the practice of oil pulling for Acute and Chronic diseases?
Acute diseases can be healed in two to four days by practicing oil pulling three times a day on empty stomach, before breakfast, lunch and dinner. Chronic diseases need more time may be up to one year or more depending on the condition of disease, age, habits, state of general health of the person, etc.

What problems can arise during oil pulling?
(a) Oil does not become watery or thin even after 30 minutes and it appears the oil is being absorbed and it reduces in quantity
(b) Nose block due to accumulation of mucus
(c) Sneezing and coughing
(d) Phlegm in the throat gets loose and comes into the mouth
(e) Urge to pass urine or stools.
Let’s understand in detail.
(a) Oil does not become watery because there is inadequate salivation and mouth is dry. In most cases, it happens in the morning and in some cases evening also. Under normal circumstances oil will not get absorbed in the mouth. Main reason is lack of adequate salivation due to lack fluids in body. In all such cases you must drink two or three glasses of water, go for a walk of 30 to 45 minutes and do oil pulling after returning.
(b) To avoid nose block during oil pulling wash, clean and blow your nose before starting oil pulling. Slowly blow out nose to clear while holding the oil in the mouth. Repeat if necessary as you continue oil pulling.
(c) Sensation/irritation may cause sneezing or coughing while doing oil pulling. Do oil pulling slowly in a relaxed state to avoid such irritation. Stop pulling and relax as irritation or sensation to sneeze is felt. It will subside. You can sneeze or cough while holding oil in mouth. If you have to sneeze or cough through mouth do it in the sink or some such place to avoid oil driblets spray all over or cover mouth with tissue paper.
(d) If phlegm comes into the mouth, making pulling inconvenient, spit and do pulling with fresh oil again.
(e) Urge to urinate or pass stools will arise only if you have not gone through nature’s calls before oil pulling. In all cases of urge to pass stools or urinate during oil pulling, the best is to relax on the commode and do oil pulling.

How long will it take to cure a particular disease?
How long it takes to cure a particular disease is difficult to specify because it depends on the age, state of health and disease, food and other habits etc of each person. Dr Karach however said“that chronic diseases may take a year whereas acute diseases can be cured in 2 to 4 days. Practice until the original strength, freshness, calm sleep, good appetite and good remembrance is back again”. Please use oil pulling as complementary method of healing. It is not a substitute for medical treatment prescribed by competent medical professional.

Are there any side effects of Oil Pulling?
Diseases get aggravated due to climate, food, water, air or mental state. Be aware and conscious of such causes so that you do not mistake them to be side effects. In some chronic cases there may be a reaction- an apparent aggravation before cure and it is not a side effect. It is the stage when the body is regaining the normal healthy state from a diseased condition-somewhat similar to healing crisis in naturopathy or homeopathic aggravation.

Are there restrictions on the use of medicine or treatment during Oil Pulling?
There is no restriction on the use of medicine or treatment. During chronic diseases and medication, Oil Pulling reduces the side effects of drugs. As you improve, based on your own symptoms reduce medicines over a period and stop completely. This will ensure that the disease is eliminated from the body and the body repairs itself to a perfectly healthy and normal state.
Will it help chronic bad breath, what suggestions do you have?
Oil Pulling will definitely help with bad breath. You can start by doing OP twice a day in the morning and evening for a week and then adjust the frequency afterwards.

How to wash mouth after oil pulling? Shall I use Ayurvedic tooth powder after oil pulling? Oil pulling before brushing or after brushing?
You can use any toothpaste / powder that you normally use for washing your mouth after OP. Brushing your teeth before oil pulling is up to you but definitely brush your teeth after oil pulling.

If a person is suffering from knee pain and shoulder joint pain for the past three months, whether oil pulling would heal above ailments. Which oil would be useful for Oil Pulling? sesame oil, coconut oil or sun flower oil?
Oil Pulling can bring relief to all types of pains including arthritis. I have no hesitation in recommending it to you both to try Oil Pulling to start of at least once a day in the morning. I am sure you will feel the effect within one to two weeks. In addition I have seen magneto therapy for knee pain working well. If you have a good homeopath, the small pills will also work well to reduce the pain. My favorite is organic coconut oil.

When I pull, I get the need to swallow periodically, I try to fight it but I have to, is that normal?
When oil is in the mouth for oil pulling, the phlegm sticking around the throat gets loose and falls into the throat and you swallow. This must be happening to you and you must be under the impression that it is the oil that you are swallowing. I am sure it is not the oil. Please observe carefully. The phlegm in the throat will be in very small quantities and you just automatically swallow without any effort. Try to observe and see that you are not swallowing oil which is in the mouth.

Does it help with whitening teeth, receding gums and gum sensitivity due to crowns?
Oil Pulling will solve all the three problems of teeth, receding gums and gum sensivity.

Can Oil Pulling  actually help stop my sinus infections?  I’m “pulling” twice a day (morning and before bed) and for 20 minutes each time using Sesame Oil.
Oil Pulling  will help in healing any type of infection including sinus infections. You should do Oil Pulling on empty stomach ie 4 hours after eating. So your practice in the night before going to bed may not have a gap of 4hours after dinner. Also Oil Pulling increases metabolic rate in the body so you may be alert and awake after Oil Pulling. So I suggest you do Oil Pulling  in the evening before dinner. You can continue to do in the morning on waking up before breakfast.

I have metal fillings in my teeth. Is it safe to do oil pulling?
If the metal filling is not properly done it will come off.

Testimonials:

Cancer cases
"Most importantly, I want to write about three cases of cancer. In two cases, biopsy report confirms “schirrus type of carcinoma of uterus”. In the third case, it is malignant growthof a tumor of a size bigger than tennis ball on the jawbone. This case is also of a woman on homeopathy medicines. Within two months of oil pulling, in bothcases of carcinoma of uterus bleeding reduced, general condition improved and they are confident that their disease will go. You know confidence/faith contributes to cure more than medicine.
In the case of malignant tumor after a month of oil pulling, pus came out of a hole in the tumor on the jawbone. The pus stopped after three weeks, the hole closed and the size of tumor came down to almost normal. In these cases, my medicines must have given temporary relief. I am hoping they will totally heal.
In case of joint pains the improvement that would have resulted in eight months with my medicines, have come within two moths of oil pulling.
For allergy, asthma and tooth diseases, the results are wonderful. My medicines must have given only temporary relief. I am hoping oil pulling will heal them totally."

Chapter 4

Health in your Kitchen

=========================================

Back ground to Ancient Indian Healing :

In today's world "health" and "health care" has become a major industry. Treatment is more a profession than compassion and medicine is a product than curing tool.  Patients have become customers to the medical industry. Gone are days when medical professionals used to treat out of compassion. Today the whole domain of treatment has commercial orientation. The treatment has become so expensive, that it is beyond the reach of common man. Talk of health insurance premiums that are being paid in the western world.

Ancient Indian method of healing said "medicine lies in the food one eats". This statement from Rigveda an ancient scripture had profound impact on me, and I have been studying various food articles available in our kitchen and the healing properties it has. I keep getting surprised as to how much healing material is already available in our kitchen, and we seldom explore that. I observed lot of people getting healed from their simple issues to chronic health issues just by regularly taking these kitchen available items. And I still keep getting surprised. All that is required is patience and persistence.

This experience prompted me to add this chapter "Health in your Kitchen". I confess , I am not an expert nor a naturopath. I am simply sharing my experience with items available in our kitchen and their healing properties. In this pursuit, I met many Indian grand mothers, who had wonderful remedies for illnesses. Our grand mothers have so much knowledge, but does any one listen to them? I have tried to compile these remedies in simple and summarised form.

Food is Medicine :
Not just a few, but all diseases can heal with the correct diet and absolutely no medication. Your body is capable of handling and recovering from any ailment provided you give it the appropriate terrain to heal. Supplements may at times be beneficial, but your true medicine is food and always has been.
The next time your blood pressure shoots up, remember that your body is capable of controlling it without a trip to the GP. Simple dietary changes can help prevent, and more importantly reverse, ailments like osteoporosis, diabetes and even high blood pressure without popping pills. The biggest hurdle most of us encounter is that we fail to understand our body. If you put kerosene in a car that runs on petrol, the car will break down, the human body functions better if it consumes foods that are a better fit.

Our body is mostly alkaline. A pH (potential Hydrogen) level between 1 and 6.9 is considered acidic, while one between 7.1 and 14 is marked alkaline. The human body’s natural pH level stands at 7.45, making it alkaline. All fruits and vegetables, natural juices like coconut water are alkaline, which make them a better nutrition fit than say animal proteins, tea, coffee, sugar, alcohol, and packaged foods that have high acidic levels. An imbalance in pH levels, can lead to a disruption in cellular activity, causing health problems that range from heartburn to heart disease.

Nutrients in foods do not work alone in isolation, instead they work together as a powerhouse team in what’s called synergy. We’re often so focused on single nutrients like vitamin c and calcium, that we don’t consider that maybe it’s how these nutrients work with one another that make them so great.

The Journal of Nutrition in 2004 conducted a study on rats that were fed tomatoes and broccoli. Prostate tumors grew less in rats fed a combination of tomatoes and broccoli versus rats who were fed tomatoes and broccoli on its own. They even isolated and removed the cancer fighting substances found in tomatoes and broccoli and fed them to the rats, but they were ineffective. The point I’m trying to make is, a lycopene (the potent nutrient in tomatoes) supplement might be useful, but the whole tomato is better, and that tomato with a bit of fat is even better, but that tomato with a bit of fat and some broccoli is so much better. Why exactly? Scientists are still unsure but it’s all attributed to food synergy.

Eat Right To Be Healthy :
Let me explain the point with the help of examples of some common diseases.

Osteoporosis : Calcium deficiency is not the cause of this condition. It’s a diet that’s either very rich in acidic foods or high in protein. Proteins are broken down into amino acids which are acid yeilding. And so, consuming large amounts of animal protein results in the body extracting calcium from the bones to neutralise the effect of acids. When the lost calcium is not restored, it causes osteoporosis over a period of time.
Food solution: Eat foods rich in vitamin D (it helps the body absorb calcium from foods), eliminate acidic foods like colas and caffeine. Include more fruits and vegetables in your meals. Green leafy veggies are rich in Vitamin K, and help rebuild bones.

Diabetes : Sugar is not the cause of diabetes, rather high blood sugar is the result of diabetes. The real cause of type 2 diabetes is the presence of fats in muscle cells. Beta cells present in the pancreas monitor the bloodstream for glucose. When blood sugar levels rise after meals, the beta cells respond by secreting insulin. Insulin helps in the further absorption of glucose. Consumption of unhealthy fats causes beta cells to lose their ability to sense glucose in the blood, allowing blood sugar to rise unnaturally.
Food solution: Avoid unhealthy fats found in fried foods, packaged foods, butter, meat, whole fat dairy products, and most vegetable oils. Any fat that comes with fibre is good for you. Think peanuts, cashew, and sunflower, sesame and pumpkin seeds.

Acne : Eating processed foods increases imbalance of Omega-3 fats in the diet and aggravate acne. Omega-3 fats are known to counter the effect of inflammatory chemicals that lead to breakouts.
Food solution: Have a diet that’s low on sugar and rich in whole grains, fibre, fruits and vegetables. It will balance the body’s insulin levels. Go for Omega-3 rich walnuts, flaxseeds, spinach and strawberries. Avoid fried and greasy foods.

High blood pressure : Blood pressure is the force ex- erted against the walls of the arteries as blood flows through them. If a person has high blood pressure, it means that the walls of the arteries are receiving too much pressure repeatedly. Consumption of unhealthy fats leads to a build up of cholesterol deposits along the artery walls, thinning the passage for blood flow, and thereby adding to the pressure.
Food solution: Adopt a two-pronged approach — stay away from unhealthy fats found in fried and packaged foods, and boost the intake of potassium, a mineral that reduces the effect of sodium on blood pressure levels. Mushrooms, bananas, dark green leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes, oranges and dates are high in potassium.

Asthma : Asthma is an allergic response of the body to a substance, such as foreign dust particles or foods that cause swelling or inflammation of the airways. High levels of histamine, a chemical messenger that helps direct the body’s response to a foreign invader, have been found to inflammate respiratory airways.
Food solution: Although no diet can guarantee the reversal of asthma, avoiding foods that up histamine levels can help control it. These include: alcohol, vinegar, ketchup, confectionary made with yeast, sour cream and fermented and processed foods.

Maintain the balance of food

Choose your food wisely. The higher the pH value, the better it is for the body.

Also worth noting that 1 point shift in level is 10 times intensity, meaning pH3 is 10 times more acidic than pH4, and 100 times than pH5. Like wise for Alkaline food. Colas / Soda have average pH level 3.
Rule of thumb is to keep your average food at pH7 level.

There is a good bit of talk about foods being alkaline these days. Many new diets or detox plans, or nutrition websites enforce a topic known as alkalinity (and also charge you handsomely for it). Alkalinity is the opposite of acidic.
The pH scale measures the difference between alkaline and acid based substances, including food. For example, chocolate and coffee are acidic while leafy greens and lemons are extremely alkaline. What does this matter?
An alkaline body is one of the best ways to achieve health. A healthy body is more than just about your weight. When the body is alkaline based, optimum weight will be achieved, effortlessly.
When you take into account how a food affects your whole body (skin, mood, hair, joints), then you can stop focusing so much on your weight.
When our bodies become acidic, we experience an array of symptoms from inflammation, indigestion, fatigue, nausea, weight gain, headaches, sour mood, dry and sallow or oily skin, brittle or dry hair, and often digestive woes like constipation or poor digestion overall. Too much consumption of acidic foods tends to make our bodies just cave in, like they want to give up on the effort of going any further. They also make us crave food because our cells aren't being nourished on a deep level.
Alkaline foods on the other hand, act like a flushing of pure water through our cells that rejuvenate us, energize us, give us youthful skin, balance our weight, lubricate our joints and make our skin, hair and nails beautiful. This is why the raw food diet is so popular- it is based on alkalinity and raw foods are the best source for alkaline sources. While I don't eat a raw diet, I do truly value alkaline foods because I can tell a major difference when I eat alkaline versus too much acidic foods.
In ancient Indian scriptures, food has been classified in 3 categories.
Satvik food with pH value above 9.
Rajasi food with pH value between 6 - 9.
Tamasi food with pH value below 6.
For healthy body one should have 80% of the total food above pH value of 7 and 20% of the total food below pH value of 7.

Colour your plate right

The best way to ensure that your diet is balanced is to colour code it. Pigmentation is what lends colour to fruits and vegetables, and also contains healthy nutrients. The deeper the colour, the higher the percentage of a specific nutrient the food item has. Purple coloured foods like plums and aubergines have phytochemicals called anthocyanins and resveratrol that fight ageing, reduce blood pressure and protect the body against liver diseases.

Orange-coloured foods such as oranges and carrots contain betacarotene and betacryptoxanthin that keep the skin and eyes healthy, and also protect against arthritis. Yellow foods such as bananas and sweet corn contain carotenoids that boost the immune system and keep the heart healthy. White foods, including garlic, onions, cauliflower and mushrooms, are rich in vitamin C, and antibiotic and antifungal compounds that fight cell damage and keep the fighter white blood cells healthy. Red foods like tomatoes and watermelons contain the powerful antioxidant lycopene which acts as an internal sunscreen and protects you from sunburn, prevents osteoporosis and heart diseases.

Greens such as peas, broccoli and spinach are packed with sulforaphane, isothiocyanate, and indoles which stimulate the liver to keep cancer producing chemicals in check.

Always choose real foods over processed foods. If the food didn’t grow in a garden or a farm, then it’s not a real food. This means choose the potato over the potato chips. Eat an orange rather than drink orange juice. Eat fruit instead of fruit snacks.

Diversify your food. Always aim for eating a variety of foods and colors. Whole foods vary in color because they all possess their own unique set of nutrients. Choose foods with bright colors and you’ll be sure to get a wide range of needed nutrients for disease prevention, optimal performance, high energy, and clear thinking.

Ancient Indian Perspective on Illness :

According to ancient Indian thinking , any disease is on account of following nature of the body:
Acid disorder - Pitta
Cough disorder - Kapha
Gas disorder - Vayu

Any imbalance in one or combination will result in the disease.

=======================================================================

The Acid Disorder - Pitta

Majority of modern diseases are due to Acidic food, which is consumed far in excess what body can digest. For maintaining good health, the ratio of total food to be 80% Alkaline food and 20% Acidic food.

=======================================================================

Gas Dis order - Vatta

=======================================================================
Cough Disorder - Kapha

Diabetes :

According to ancient Indian scriptures, diabetes is a metabolic kapha type of disorder in which diminished functioning of agni leads to a tendency toward high blood sugar. (It recognizes 24 forms of the disease commonly classified under Prameha - 4 are due to Vata dosha, 6 are due to Pitta dosha, and 10 are caused by Kapha dosha. The main causes of these diseases are fat, urine, and Kapha buildups due to foods, liquids, lifestyle and others.)

Ayurvedic practitioners attack diabetes using a multiprong approach. First, they address diet modification, eliminating sugar and simple carbohydrates, and emphasizing complex carbohydrates. Protein is limited, since excessive intake can damage the kidneys. Fat is also limited because there is often a deficiency of pancreatic enzymes, making fat digestion difficult. Since many diabetics have autoantibodies, a cleansing program is instituted. Panchakarma is typically used for this purpose. This begins with herbal massages and an herbal steam sauna, followed by fasting to cleanse the body. This is followed by an herbal purge for the liver, pancreas, and spleen. Colon therapy is next, first to cleanse the digestive tract and then to reconstitute the system.

Naturopathy practitioners also use several herbal preparations for diabetics. Exercise is another cornerstone treatment of diabetes. Yoga and breathing exercises are traditionally used.

=======================================================================
Arthritis / Joint Pain :
According to ancient Indian scriptures, most pains are caused by the aggravation of vata (gas) dosha. Arthritis is a condition which is caused by accumulation of ama and aggravation of vata. (Ama is a toxic by-product of improper digestion.) This ama circulates in the whole body and deposits or gets collected at the sites which are weaker. When it deposits in the joints and at the same time there is aggravation of vata, it results in a disease called amavata. This amavata is arthritis.
As described above ama and vata are the main causes, so efforts should be made to digest ama and to reduce the vata. The digestion should be improved so that no further ama is produced.Replacing acidic food with alkaline food will certainly help. Efforts should be made to relieve the pain and inflammation. This is the line of treatment according to ancient Indian scriptures.

Concentration Improvement :

These days parents have big worry about their kids having problems of concentration as a result lower performance in studies. This paper is designed from ancient Indian scriptures.

Concentration has been defined as "the ability to direct one's thinking in whatever direction one would intend and reproduce at appropriate time.”

We all have the ability to concentrate some of the time. But at other times our thoughts are scattered, and our minds race from one thing to another. To deal with such times, we need to learn and practice concentration skills and strategies. To concentrate, we have to learn a skill, and as with any skill this means practice repeated day after day until we achieve enough improvement to feel that we can concentrate when we need to.

Our ability to concentrate depends on

commitment

enthusiasm for the task

skill at doing the task

our emotional and physical state

our psychological state

our environment

food

stress levels

Human mind has two segments.

Conscious mind which takes decisions and interacts with environment.

Sub Conscious mind which is storage.

Concentration is toggling of data between these two segments of mind.

Concentration is ability of Retention (data moving from conscious to sub conscious mind) and Recall (data moving from sub conscious to conscious mind).

The data moves in electro magnetic form, hence this paper aims at facilitating better toggling of data.

Junk food, aerated drinks, alcohol, artificial sweetners, maida(super fine wheat flour) reduces power to concentrate significantly, hence avoidable.

Constipation

Constipation is defined medically as fewer than three stools per week and severe constipation as less than one stool per week.
Constipation usually is caused by the slow movement of stool through the colon.
There are many causes of constipation including medications, poor bowel habits, low fiber diets, abuse of laxatives, hormonal disorders, and diseases primarily of other parts of the body that also affect the colon.
The two disorders limited to the colon that cause constipation are colonic inertia and pelvic floor dysfunction.
High levels of estrogen and progesterone during pregnancy also can cause constipation.
Medical evaluation for the cause of constipation should be done when constipation is of sudden onset, severe, worsening, associated with other worrisome symptoms such as loss of weight, or is not responding to simple, safe treatments.
Medical evaluation of constipation may include a history, physical examination, blood tests, abdominal X-rays, barium enema, colonic transit studies, defecography, anorectal motility studies, and colonic motility studies.
The goal of therapy for constipation is one bowel movement every two to three days without straining.
Treatment of constipation may include dietary fiber, non-stimulant laxatives, stimulant laxatives, enemas, suppositories, biofeedback training, and surgery.
Stimulant laxatives should be used as a last resort because of the possibility that they may permanently damage the colon and worsen constipation.
Most herbal laxatives contain stimulant-type laxatives and should be used, if at all, as a last resort.

What is constipation?

Constipation means different things to different people. For many people, it simply means infrequent stools. For others, however, constipation means hard stools, difficulty passing stools (straining), or a sense of incomplete emptying after a bowel movement. The cause of each of these "types" of constipation probably is different, and the approach to each should be tailored to the specific type of constipation.

Constipation also can alternate with diarrhea. This pattern commonly occurs as part of the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). At the extreme end of the constipation spectrum is fecal impaction, a condition in which stool hardens in the rectum and prevents the passage of any stool.

The number of bowel movements generally decreases with age. Ninety-five percent of adults have bowel movements between three and 21 times per week, and this would be considered normal. The most common pattern is one bowel movement a day, but this pattern is seen in less than 50% of people. Moreover, most people are irregular and do not have bowel movements every day or the same number of bowel movements each day.

Medically speaking, constipation usually is defined as fewer than three bowel movements per week. Severe constipation is defined as less than one bowel movement per week. There is no medical reason to have a bowel movement every day. Going without a bowel movement for two or three days does not cause physical discomfort, only mental distress for some people. Contrary to popular belief, there is no evidence that "toxins" accumulate when bowel movements are infrequent or that constipation leads to cancer.

It is important to distinguish short term (recent onset) constipation from chronic (long term) constipation. Acute constipation requires urgent assessment because a serious medical illness may be the underlying cause (for example, tumors of the colon). Constipation also requires an immediate assessment if it is accompanied by worrisome symptoms such as rectal bleeding, abdominal pain and cramps, nausea and vomiting, and involuntary loss of weight. In contrast, the evaluation of chronic constipation may not be urgent, particularly if simple measures bring relief.

Here are a few of Natural items that can work wonders:
1. Triphala powder or Triphala Churna, consists of three fruits - Amla or Indian gooseberry, Haritaki (Chebulic Myrobalan) and Vibhitaki (Bellirica Myrobalan). It is a great laxative and helps to regulate digestion and bowel movements. You can either have one teaspoon with warm water or mix the powder with honey. Having this mixture either before going to bed or early in the morning on an empty stomach can relieve constipation almost instantaneously. The advantage of this powder is that it is not habit forming and a completely natural alternative to chemical laxatives.

2. Raisins (kishmish) are packed with fiber and act as great natural laxatives. Soak a handful in water overnight and have them first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. This remedy also works wonders for pregnant woman, without the side effects of medication.

3. Guavas (amrood or peru) have soluble fibre in the pulp and insoluble fiber content in the seeds. They also help with the mucus production in the anus and with peristalsis (a series of contractions within the intestinal lining that helps the passage of food in the stomach).

4. Lemon (Nimbu) juice is recommended by most Ayurvedic practitioners. A warm glass of water with lemon and salt, first thing in the morning not only acts as a cleansing agent for the intestines, the salt content helps in quick and easy passage of stool. All you need to do is mix one teaspoon of lemon juice in a glass of warm water. Add a pinch of salt to the solution. Drink this juice on an empty stomach to relieve constipation.

5. Figs (Anjeer), either dried or ripe, are packed with fiber. For relief from constipation, boil a few figs in a glass of milk, drink this mixture at night before bed. Make sure the mixture is warm when you drink it. Using a whole fruit for this purpose is much better as compared to syrups that are available commercially.

6. Flax seeds (Alsi) are known for their fiber content, and can very well help you when it comes to constipation. You can mix flax seeds in your cereal every morning or just have a handful with warm water early in the morning.

7. Castor oil (Arandi ka tel) has been used for centuries as a sure shot remedy for constipation and has properties that can kill intestinal worms.

8. Spinach (Palak) have properties that cleanse, rebuild and renew the intestinal tract. You can have about 100 ml of spinach juice mixed with an equal quantity of water twice daily. This home remedy is the most effective method to cure even the most stubborn cases of constipation.

9. Oranges are not only a great source of Vitamin C but also have a large amount of fiber content. Eating two oranges every day, once in the morning and once in the evening can provide great relief from constipation.

10. Seed mixtures with 2-3 sunflower seeds, a few flax seeds, til or sesame seeds and almonds ground together to a fine powder can help relieve constipation. Have one tablespoon of this mixture everyday, for a week. You can add it to your salad or cereal every morning. This mixture not only provides the necessary fiber content to relieve constipation but it also helps in rejuvenating the intestinal walls.

Diet tips to avoid constipation:
In order to avoid and cure constipation, it is essential that you maintain healthy food habits. Here are a few changes you could make in your diet to cure constipation:
Avoid foods that contain white flour like maida, white sugar and other processed foods.
Eat light regular meals, and make sure you eat at least 3-4 hours before you go to bed.
Include fruits and vegetables into your daily diet.
Adding condiments like jeera, haldi and ajwain in your food while cooking it is a great way to help digestion.

High Blood Pressure :

According to the American Heart Association, nearly one in three adults in the United States has high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. But nearly one-third of those people don't know they have high blood pressure, because it's a silent disease. People can have high blood pressure for years without experiencing symptoms or knowing they have it.

The upper or first number in a blood pressure reading is the systolic pressure and the lower or second number is called the diastolic pressure. According to National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute guidelines:

Normal blood pressure is below 120/80 mmHg.

Pre hypertension is systolic pressure that's between 120 to 139 or diastolic pressure between 80 and 89.

Stage 1 hypertension is systolic pressure between 140 to 159 or diastolic pressure between 90 and 99.

Stage 2 hypertension is systolic pressure higher than 160 or diastolic pressure of 100 or higher.

High Blood Pressure Symptoms

High blood pressure usually doesn't cause any symptoms in the early stages. Symptoms associated with high blood pressure can include:

Dizziness or dizzy spells

Headache

Nosebleeds

Causes of High Blood Pressure

In most cases of high blood pressure, the American Heart Association says there is no one identifiable cause. This kind of high blood pressure is called primary hypertension or essential hypertension. It is usually a combination of factors, such as:

Weight. The greater your body mass, the more pressure there is on your artery walls. That's because more blood is produced to supply oxygen and nutrients to tissues in your body.

Activity level. Lack of physical activity tends to increase heart rate, which forces your heart to work harder with each contraction.

Tobacco use. Chemicals in cigarettes and tobacco can damage artery walls.

Sodium intake. Excessive sodium in the diet can result in fluid retention and high blood pressure, especially in people sensitive to sodium.

Potassium intake. Low potassium can result in elevated sodium in cells, because the two balance one another.

Stress. Stress can raise blood pressure.

Alcohol consumption. Excessive alcohol intake can, over time, increase the risk of heart disease.

Age. The risk of high blood pressure increases as you get older.

Family history. High blood pressure often runs in families.

High blood pressure can also be caused by an underlying condition, such as kidney disease, hormonal disorders, thyroid disease, adrenal gland disease, and the use of certain drugs, such as oral contraceptives, or herbs such as licorice. This type of high blood pressure is called secondary hypertension.

Items that help to reduce B P :
Bananas : Banana is a rich source of potassium which helps in controlling the blood pressure level. At the same time it has low sodium level and free of cholesterol which also help a lot. So, try to eat two bananas daily. Along with banana, you can also try dried apricots, raisins, currants, orange juice, spinach, zucchini, baked sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, and winter squash.
Garlic : Both raw and cooked garlic is said to have properties that can help to control high blood pressure level and at the same time it can also reduce the cholesterol level. When blood pressure level is high, one must try to eat two cloves of garlic daily after slightly crushing it in a paste form. Crushed garlic cloves create hydrogen sulfide, a compound that promotes good blood flow, removes gas and reduces the pressure on the heart.
Methi (Fenugreek seeds) : The paste of fenugreek seeds is one of the most effective ways to lower the high blood pressure level. To make paste out of fenugreek seeds, take half poon of fenugreek seeds and soak them to quarter cup of water over night and with the help of a blender make a paste. Take this paste twice a day, one in the morning on an empty stomach and one in the evening. Follow this remedy for two or three months to notice significant improvement in your blood pressure level.
Lemon : Regular consumption of lemon is also a good way to control hypertension. Lemon helps in making the blood vessels soft and pliable and removes their rigidity which in turn lowers the high blood pressure. In fact, when lemon is consumed regulalry, there is less chance of heart failure due to its invaluable Vitamin B content. Those having high blood pressure must drink fresh lemon water several times a day. For better result, add a spoon og Ginger juice and a spoon of Honey. Do not add salt or sugar to lemon water.

Method of doing Shavasana Yoga:
Lie down face up on the yoga mat in a warm room.
Place your feet about 20 inches apart and loosen (relax) the ankles and toes so that they point outwards.
Place the hands palm up about 10 inches away from the body.
Ensure that your shoulder blades are pulled down and the small of your back is relaxed into the floor.
Completely relax the body so that eventually you’ll forget its there.
Focus on your breath. Breathe deep and relaxed. Notice the subtle movements of breathing.

====================================================================
Asthma :

A word derived from Greek etymology which literally means 'panting' or 'gasping' for breath; is attributed to a disease related to the respiratory tract. Triggered by way of an allergic reaction of the body to one or many stimulants or 'allergens'; a patient in its attacking spell suffers from breathlessness. Marked by a prolonged difficulty in breathing out, asthma is marked by involuntary spasm of small muscular air passages of lungs. Occurring primarily due to an allergic reaction a number of triggers or irritants including those from weather, food, medication and use or exposure to certain chemicals may mark the onset of asthmatic attack.
For effective control and remedy of asthma; one needs to ascertain the allergen or irritant which triggers such an attack. Thus controlling the conditions which account for asthma will indirectly lead to fewer attacks of asthma.
For people susceptible to asthma on account of pollen, dust and pets need to ensure their protection against the causal factors. It is imperative that they go for air conditioning of their rooms and cars to prevent exposure to the sources of irritation.
It is imperative that they stay away from carpets, draperies and toys which accumulate dust. The ones allergic to animal furs need to ensure that pets are not allowed in vicinity of living rooms.
Besides avoiding the likely allergens, certain dietary means have been found beneficial for those prone to asthmatic attacks. For instance powdered turmeric added to milk keeps such attacks away; if consumed daily on empty stomach

Cancer :
Cancer isn't actually a disease, but in fact an age old survival mechanism of the body which is activated via epigenetic changes in its micro-environment or terrain of the body.
When the pH of the blood begins to drop from its normal level of 7.4 to around 5.0 (from the over consumption of processed, non-organic, acidic food, GMO food), the cells of the body begin to alter their state by creating a cell wall that is 15 times as thick as normal so they can live in a very acidic environment.
They are also forced to live without oxygen (Dr. Otto Walberg proved this in 1931), needing no nutrients and are able to live off their own waste. When we reverse the need for cancer, the body heals itself. Focusing on the terrain is most important.

Improving dietary habits and taking more oxygen is key to healing Cancer.

The dosage of each component depends upon the chronic state of Cancer.

However, an attempt is made to give an idea of how each item can heal cancer.

What food causes Cancer and what foods fights Cancer : The food that causes Cancer are mainly in 3 categories

1. Maida (Processed wheat floor)

2. Fried food

3. Meat

Cancer also has strong connection to constipation.

Home Remedies for Erectile Dysfunction
The inability of a man to achieve or sustain an erection is called erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction has become a common problem, and it is believed that approximately 40% of males suffer from it at one time or another in life. In Ayurveda erectile dysfunction is referred to as ‘Klaibya’.
Causes For Erectile Dysfunction
There are numerous reasons for causing erectile dysfunction, e.g. certain drugs (anti-depressants), neurological disorders, Cavernosal disorders (Peyronie’s disease), etc. Sometimes erectile dysfunction may be traced back to certain health problems like diabetes, depression, or severe reaction to any drug. Excessive alcohol drinking and cigarette smoking are also reasons for it. Psychological factors are also major causes of impotence and can be due to some reasons including the increased focus on sexual performance in society.
Ayurvedic ViewIn Ayurveda excessive intercourse (without using aphrodisiacs), perverted sexual habits and vitiation of Vata dosha have also been blamed for causing Erectile Dysfunction. Whatever the cause, the problem of Erectile Dysfunction can be very embarrassing and disheartening for both the partners. If it continues for a prolonged period, the psychological factors involved worsen the situation and can cause an unhealthy aversion to sex.
